Methodology
In our research design, we included reading lists for all compulsory and core modules in taught degree programmes within UCL’s Political Science Department. Beyond these, we also included a random sample of reading lists from optional modules.
Reading lists were compiled in a spreadsheet according to module code and level (undergraduate/postgraduate), and every fifth one was selected.
What we coded for:
Module code
Was it a core or optional module?
Author
The gender and race of the author/s of the article. For reasons of practicality, we coded each author according to the binary variable “White/Non-White”.
Topic
Are the topics of gender, disability, race, and sexuality discussed in the article?
Diversity of Ideas
Does the article include non-mainstream approaches? Examples of non-mainstream approaches include critical race theory, queer theory, feminist theory, social model of disability and postcolonial/decolonial approaches?
Geographical scope
Where do the case studies used in the article come from?
Methods
Does the research in the article use qualitative, quantitative, normative or mixed methods?
Lecturer
The gender and race of the lecturer who assigned the article.
